Nokia is now no longer the best selling handset manufacturer.
Samsung have continued to grow year on year and have now overtaken Nokia with
the Number 1 spot.
The mobile phone industry has notoriously been fluctuanting with
sales continually going up and down through the year. Nokia has historically
been at the top since the late 1990’s as their classic designs and easy to use
interface was well known and loved by millions of people. These days although
Nokia is still a very dominant player, they are no longer at the top of the
tree. So why would this happen? Well the main reason is the Android system for
smartphones.
Last year Nokia made a bad choice and decided not to use Android
on their handsets. Other brands including Samsung went the other way and chose
to use Android. Unfortunatly for Nokia the Android system then took off in a
big way, proving to be very popular with clients. As a result sales for non Android
mobiles fell, hitting Nokia badly. Their smartphone sales went down by 24%! At
the same time Samsung’s went up by 50% and Apple’s increased by nearly 100%!
As these stats demonstrate, there is lots of money to be made
from the mobile phone industry, but you need to know what to invest in and
predict what will be popular with the public. In this case, Nokia chose
incorrectly and it has cost them dearly.
Senior figures at Nokia have attempted to put the blame on the
economic recession, rather than bad business decisions, but that doesn’t make
sense when you take into account the increased sales of Samsung and Apple. The
main uptake in sales for Samsung was for their popular Galaxy Note and SII
handsets. Predictions are that sales will continue to rise through the rest
of 2012.
Apple continue to go from strength to strength. Can they do no
wrong?! The iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad are all huge sellers. They certainly
have that magic touch when it comes to anticipating consumer trends. Their
corporation was undoutedly shaken when Steve Jobs passed away, but the company
has continued to gown and gain new territories to operate in. Where are last
year the top mobile players were Nokia and Samsung, this year and next it will
no doubt be Samsung and Apple fighting for the top spot.
There has been much talk of SIMonly deals becoming more and more popular as people strive to reduce their
monthly outgoing by taking out cheaper contracts, however with these continued
sales in handsets it shows that there are still people who would prefer to sign
up for a new handset instead of take the saving offered by a SIM only contract.
